The holes that have been detected on the sea floor amaze scientists.

Scientists from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ship Okeanos Explorer have discovered a series of mysterious “perfectly aligned” holes in the seafloor about 2.6 kilometers below the ocean’s surface, and they have no idea who or what made them.

The strange holes were discovered by the ship’s crew while investigating the Mid-Atlantic ridge, an almost unexplored region of the seabed that is part of the largest mountain range in the world.

The holes form a straight line and appear at regularly repeating distances and are surrounded by small mounds of sediment.

The mysterious holes at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean

This is not the first time that holes have been found in the area; two marine scientists from the US National Marine Fisheries Service. they also detected mysterious holes in the sea floor during a dive in 2004.

“The origin of these holes remains a mystery,” NOAA researchers wrote on Facebook. “Although they look almost man-made, the small mounds of sediment around the holes make it look like they were dug by … something.“.

In 2004, scientists proposed that the holes were made by an organism that lived in the sediment at the bottom of the sea. or scrutinized, but as no one has seen these creatures make them, their exact origin is unknown.

Public speculation on NOAA’s Facebook page has been mixed.: From cracks in the bottom surface caused by a gas leak, to underwater human ships digging for treasure, to ants.

The possibility that they were extraterrestrial processing has even been considered and it has even been proposed that they could be sea stars doing somersaults.

The hypothesis of Atlantis that could explain the holes in the seabed

The unsolved mystery recalls the “yellow brick road“from Atlantis that ocean explorers discovered last May, on top of an undersea mountain near Hawaii.

Scientists explained that discovery: they suspected the warming and cooling of the seafloor during multiple volcanic eruptions they had created the strange path.

Instead, what is creating the holes may take a little longer to uncover.. The researchers will continue to explore the region until September as part of the expedition Journey to the ridge 2022whose goal is to map the coral reefs and sponge habitats of the region.

The goal is to gather background information on unexplored and little-known deep-sea areas of the Charlie-Gibbs fracture zone, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Azores Plateau.

In addition to studying the hydrothermal vents in the area and their fracture and fissure zones. If they’re lucky, they might catch the hole maker in the act. And unravel one of the many mysteries of the seabed.
