The National Assembly approved on Tuesday night the accession of Finland and Ukraine to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). 209 deputies voted in favor and 46 voted against the bill “for the ratification of two protocols to the NATO treaty related to the accession of Finland and Sweden”.
Last week, the Senate approved the text by an overwhelming majority (323 in favor, 17 against). But the parliamentarians, both in the Senate and in the National Assembly, denounced the “blackmail” of Turkey, which lifted its veto on the accession of the two Nordic countries in exchange for the extradition of the Kurdish opponents.
Sweden and Finland, long-time neutrals, have indicated in recent weeks that they want to join NATO because of the growing threat from Russia, which is waging war in Ukraine.
