China summoned the US ambassador to Beijing on Tuesday in response to the arrival of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in Taiwan, state media reported.
During a meeting with Ambassador Nicholas Burns, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Xie Feng expressed “strong protests” during the US lawmaker’s visit to the autonomous island, which China considers part of its territory.
“The measure is extremely ugly and the consequences are extremely serious,” Xie told Chinese state news agency Xinhua. “China will not sit idly by,” he added.
Pelosi’s visit, the highest US official to visit Taiwan in 25 years, fueled tensions between the world’s two largest economies and Beijing described the visit as a major provocation.
Xie said the United States would “pay for its own mistakes” and urged Washington to “immediately correct its mistakes and take practical steps to reverse the negative effects caused by Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan”.
The Democrat arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday afternoon in open defiance of Chinese warnings.
According to Xinhua, Xie told Burns, “Taiwan is China’s Taiwan, and Taiwan will eventually return to the lap of its homeland. The Chinese people are not afraid of ghosts, oppression, and evil.”
There was no immediate comment from Washington.
