Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, said on Tuesday that her visit to Taiwan served to “support” the island’s democracy in the face of “threats” from Beijing.

“By traveling to Taiwan, we fulfill our commitment to democracy and reaffirm that the freedoms of Taiwan and all democracies must be respected,” he said in an article published in the Washington Post after arriving on the island.

Pelosi landed at Taipei’s Songshan airport at 10:43 p.m. (11:43 p.m. EDT), where Beijing began a retaliatory visit.

In his opinion column, the leader of the lower house of Congress argued that the United States should “support Taiwan”, which he called “a viable and robust democracy” under “threatened”.

In recent years, he criticized “Beijing has significantly increased tensions with Taiwan”, with increased air operations in the island region, cyber attacks on institutions and intimidation against countries cooperating with the island.

“In the face of aggression by the Chinese Communist Party, our congressional delegation’s visit should be seen as a clear statement that the United States stands by our democratic partner, Taiwan, while defending its freedom,” he said.

However, Pelosi reiterated that her trip “does not in any way contradict” the US position on Taiwan – since 1979 the US government has supported the “one China” policy and opposes the independence of the island.

He stressed that “US solidarity with Taiwan is more important than ever today” not only for the island’s 23 million people, but also for the “millions of oppressed people” in China.

Pelosi spoke of the “brutal repression” in Hong Kong, the “campaign to erase the identity” of the Tibetan people, and the “genocide” against Muslim Uighurs in Xinjiang province.

This is the first visit by the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives to Taiwan since Republican Newt Gingrich was on the island in 1997.

Neither Pelosi nor the Taiwanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs had confirmed whether the trip to Asia included the island tour.

On Tuesday, China’s Foreign Ministry said it was “difficult to imagine a more reckless and provocative action” than this visit, in which the US warned that the Chinese military would “not be idle” anytime soon. .

China claims sovereignty over the island and has viewed Taiwan as a rebellious province since the nationalist Kuomintang party settled there in 1949 after losing the civil war against the communists.
