The plane that took US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on Tuesday became the most followed plane in the history of Flightradar24, which tracks flights.

“During the landing in Taipei, [o voo] “SPAR19 was watched by over 708,000 people worldwide, making it the most followed live flight in Flightradar24’s history.”

Pelosi’s controversial trip exacerbates tensions between the United States and China, which see Taiwan as a rebellious province.

Pelosi is the most senior US congresswoman to visit Taiwan since 1997, when then House Speaker Newt Gingrich visited the island.

Taking off from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Pelosi’s plane has already been accompanied by more than 200,000 people as it flies over Indonesia. “The amount increased as the plane approached Taiwan,” Flightradar24 said.

“The unprecedented and continued interest in flying has taken a heavy toll on Flightradar24’s infrastructure,” it said on its website. The number of visitors was so high that there was a need to limit access to non-subscribers to keep the service live.
