Rafael Grossi, director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a United Nations-affiliated body, said the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine was “totally out of control”.
The structure has been under the management of the Russian army since March this year.
“There is a list of principles and norms that should never exist in any nuclear power plant. And the situation there is very fragile. Every nuclear safety principle has been violated in one way or another, and we can no longer allow that to happen,” Grossi said. He warned that the case was “extremely serious”.
The situation at the Zaporizhzhia facility, Europe’s largest such structure, has worried the IAEA for months. On June 30, the agency issued a statement that the site had again lost contact with remote security and surveillance systems.
In addition, it requires technicians to visit for repairs and assess the situation, something that has not happened since the war in Ukraine began on February 24.
According to official information, only two of the six reactors at the site are operational. And despite the Russian control, the operation of the equipment is carried out by Ukrainian technicians.
