China announced on Friday that it is imposing sanctions on US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi after her visit to Taiwan, which angered Beijing and prompted the start of major military exercises.
The Chinese foreign ministry said in a statement that Pelosi’s visit “seriously interfered with China’s internal affairs and seriously undermined its sovereignty and territorial integrity”, which would lead to Beijing “imposing sanctions on Pelosi and her immediate family”.
In Beijing’s view, China has sanctioned several US government officials in the Hong Kong and Xinjiang region (northwest) in recent years for actions and human rights statements contrary to the country’s interests, sometimes without specifying the nature of the measures.
In March, Beijing imposed visa restrictions on an unpublished list of U.S. officials alleged “for fabricating lies about human rights issues concerning China.”
Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to former President Donald Trump, have already been targeted by sanctions, with a ban on entering China or doing business with Chinese companies.
China, which recognizes Taiwan as part of its territory, began Thursday in response to Pelosi’s visit to what is the most important military exercise in decades around the island, which will conclude on Sunday.
