“We also signal that the United States stands ready for whatever China decides to do,” White House spokesman John Kirby said Friday.

The White House has summoned China’s ambassador to Washington to condemn China’s “irresponsible” behavior on Taiwan, executive branch spokesman for national security affairs John Kirby said on Friday.

Qin Gang was summoned after the Chinese military’s “provocative” show of force in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, John Kirby said.

“We condemn China’s military operations, which are irresponsible and contrary to our long-standing goal of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait,” the spokesman said.

“Nothing has changed in our One China Policy”

“We have made it clear to the ambassador that Beijing’s activities are of concern to Taiwan, to us and to our partners around the world,” he added, referring to concerns expressed by leading democracies gathered in the G7 and ASEAN, that brings together the main countries of Southeast Asia.

“We have made it clear once again, as we have done privately at the highest level and in public: nothing has changed in our one-China policy,” he added.

The United States does not recognize Taiwan’s independence while supporting the island’s right to remain democratic. “We will not seek or want a crisis,” he concluded.
