The Croatian Interior Ministry said 12 Poles were killed and 30 injured in a bus accident in northern Croatia on Saturday.
Croatian Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic said the victims were most likely pilgrims traveling to Medjugorje, home to a Catholic temple in Bosnia.
Medjugorje is visited by hundreds of thousands of people every year, mostly from Poland.
According to the minister, eleven people died during the accident and one person died in hospital from his injuries.
Dagmara Lukovic, an employee of the Polish consulate in Croatia, confirmed that the passengers are citizens of the country.
According to police, the accident occurred late in the morning when the bus left the lane 60km north of the Croatian capital.
Croatia welcomes millions of tourists who travel to the Adriatic coast during the summer (northern hemisphere).
Polish tourists are particularly plentiful: between January and July, more than 580,000 Polish citizens traveled to Croatia.
