The Chinese military launched major exercises around Taiwan the day after the departure of Nancy Pelosi, the US deputy leader, from Taipei, whose visit aroused the ire of Beijing.

US President Joe Biden said on Monday he was concerned about continuing Chinese military exercises near Taiwan but said he did not expect an escalation.

“I’m not worried, but I’m worried that they’re making such a fuss. But I don’t think they’re doing more than they’re doing,” he told reporters.

A reaction to Pelosi’s visit

China’s military exercises, at least in this configuration, were due to end at noon on Sunday according to the China Maritime Safety Administration. They intended to practice a “blockade” of the island, according to official Chinese media. But the maneuvers continued. China has also suspended a series of discussions and cooperation between China and the United States, in particular on climate change, in retaliation.

Opposed to any initiative that gives international legitimacy to the Taiwanese authorities, Beijing opposes any official contact between Taiwan and other countries.
