Former Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo, 71, was admitted to a private hospital in Asunción after suffering a stroke in the Senate office on Wednesday, his political colleagues reported.
“Senator Fernando Lugo suffered an ischemic stroke,” said doctor Jorge Querey, who also served as a senator for the left-wing Frente Guasú party.
Querey said his condition is “stable but in an induced coma, but on a ventilator”, a state he will remain in until Thursday.
“In complexity, the situation is under control. If we don’t have any surprises, the prognosis is good,” he added.
A former bishop, Lugo ruled Paraguay from 2008 to 2012. He has thus far been the only president who has not been a member of the right-wing Colorado party since that political force first came to power in 1954 under the dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner. 1989 under democracy.
The former president returned to Paraguay “already with symptoms” from Colombia on Monday, where he attended President Gustavo Petro’s inauguration ceremony, his deputy Esperanza Martínez, who accompanied him on that trip, told the media.
After declaring Lugo was an “at-risk patient”, Martínez commented, “He is hypertensive and is undergoing treatment.”
Lugo was ousted from the presidency in June 2012, nine months before the presidential election, in a controversial political case in which he was accused of misconduct.
