According to television footage, Peruvian President Pedro Castillo’s family home in the Cajamarca region was called this Wednesday (10) looking for his aunt, Yenifer Paredes, who was accused of corruption.
The operation failed for the second day in a row after a team of prosecutors and police also occupied the Government House without finding Paredes on Tuesday.
According to footage released by several television channels, the agents broke into Castillo’s family home in the village of Chugur in Chota province in the north of the country.
The Supreme Court of Justice on Tuesday allowed a tax requirement for the search, as Castillo’s sister-in-law indicated up to three addresses on her identity documents.
A source at the Ministry of Public Affairs consulted by AFP did not confirm the operation due to the secrecy of the process.
However, President Castillo confirmed the action in Cajamarca during a public demonstration in the middle of the morning at the Government Palace in Lima, where the Administration sits.
“They just broke into my house,” said the president, a 52-year-old rural teacher and trade unionist who has faced five tax investigations for alleged corruption, unprecedented for an incumbent president.
Yenifer Paredes, 26, who sees the President and his wife as his “parents”, is wanted for alleged involvement in corruption and money laundering networks.
In this case, he had already been summoned to testify before the Public Ministry and appear before a control commission of the Peruvian Congress in mid-July.
