A Wizz Air Airbus A321neo plane has made a chilling landing at the airport on the Greek island of Skiathos. A video of the action, dubbed “the lowest landing ever” by the local press, shows several people watching the scene.
The island’s airport is famous for its structure, where the headlands are so close to the sea, causing planes to pass several meters from those approaching – usually curious people who know what to expect. Because the runway is short, planes have to approach at an altitude close to the ground.
The recording of the “heart-stopping” video was taken by a tourist watching planes land on the island.
The video, uploaded to YouTube by GreatFlyer, begins by showing the distant white and pink plane flying over Mediterranean waters towards Skiathos Alexandros Papadiamantis Airport. A few people gathered on the beach.
The Airbus plane passes near the airport perimeter fence and a few meters from the observers’ location.
The descent is so low that it lifts dust from the sand and ruffles the hair of a cowering-looking man, while screams of surprise can be heard.
From another angle, a young man falls backwards and a woman loses her hat. Then the wheels of the plane touch the ground and the pilot lands successfully.
A follower on GreatFlyer’s channel commented that landing conditions were too low and necessary. According to him, the high temperature and short track mean you have to use all the available track and so there is skid on enthusiasts.
