Amalia, the Crown Princess of the Netherlands, begins her university studies this month in Amsterdam, instead of Leiden, and will not join a student association like her predecessors did, a break with family traditions which upsets the country and adds to his resignation from his salary and his openness to his mental health.
The decision not to join the student club, confirmed this week by the government press office (RVD), has a particular significance at the national level: it comes two weeks after the leak. misogynistic videos registered at a celebration of that association in Amsterdam, although the eldest daughter of Kings Máxima and Guillermo Alejandro did not disclose the reasons why she does not join that club.
Among the male-dominated comments captured by the cameras, three male members of the university association ASC / AVSV (Dutch acronym) refer to women as “buckets of sperm” and “nothing but a whore”, and suggest that men could “break the neck to women to penetrate them “during the event in question.

Although this has already led to a number of resignation within the associationhad focused attention on the heir, as his plan was to join the club when he began his studies in the Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics (PPLE) program at the University of Amsterdam, which in itself he had already broken with the family tradition graduated from Leiden.
historical ties
The Oranges have been linked to the University of Leiden since 1575, when this faculty was founded: Willem-Alexander graduated from it with a degree in History in 1993.
Amalia’s decision not to be a member of the ASC / AVSV was interpreted in the Netherlands as a clear position in the midst of a social debate against male chauvinism and sexual harassment. But it is also seen as a tendency to break up with her teachers: her father, her grandmother Beatriz and her great-grandmother Juliana were members of a student association.
The young woman has often been at the center of issues of social debate. Last year he spoke, for example, of his periodic visits to a psychologist to treat his mental health, especially “after what happened” with his aunt, he said, referring to the suicide in 2018 of Inés, the younger sister. of his mother, Maximus.

Moreover, after the criticisms of the parliamentarians to a budget of the Royal House that they consider excessive, the princess temporarily waived the annual salary of 300,000 euros which he will be able to receive at the age of 18, and has promised to use the other 1.3 million for personal and material expenses “only if he incurs high costs” for official activities.
At the same time, a book by Dutch lawyer Peter Rehwinkel (“Amalia, Duty Calls”) raised the debate on homosexuality in the monarchy, leading Prime Minister Mark Rutte to clarify that if Amalia eventually married a person of the same sex , would not have to renounce the throne, despite the constitution being based on the idea of hereditary succession.
Amalia herself never spoke publicly about her sexuality, nor did she intervene in that debate.
The Dutch media are now questioning the young woman’s decisions that go “against tradition”, even though, as Rehwinkel explained on NOS public television, the princess only did something the current king wanted to do, but didn’t. dared.
“His father did not want to study in Leiden or become a member of a student association. In the end, he did both, “Rehwinkel said, adding that the Crown Princess will now study in Amsterdam and not be in a student union,” so actually. he’s doing what his father intended“.
The expert stressed that the future queen of the Netherlands “shouldn’t want” to be in an environment tainted with misogynistic statements at this time, and that her refusal to join ASC / AVSV proves that “her social antenna is working” , although he believes the decision also involved his parents, to avoid criticism of the future monarch.
