MOSCOW, AUGUST 12 (EFE).- Dmitry Medvedev, vice-chairman of the Russian Security Council, accused Ukraine and its western allies this Friday of wanting another catastrophe like Chernobyl due to bullets fired from Kyiv forces. It is increasingly close to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Moscow.

Medvedev, who was Russia’s president from 2008 to 2012, said via Telegram, “It looks like Kyiv and the idiots of Western financiers are ready to set up a new Chernobyl.”

The deputy chairman of the National Security Council noted that “rockets and artillery shells are falling more and more close to the reactor of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and radioactive isotopes.”

Medvedev said, “They say it’s Russia. It’s a 100% lie even for the stupid Russophobic people. Even the UN doesn’t believe it.”

The former head of state also said that the Ukrainians stated that it was “by chance” and that they had no intention of hitting the plant.

Medvedev, “What can you say. You should not forget that there are nuclear power plants in the European Union. There may be losses there,” he said.

Yesterday, the UN put pressure on Russia and Ukraine, demanding that they avoid a nuclear disaster at the Zaporizhzhia plant in the face of the latest attacks, which Moscow and Kiev are mutually accusing.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres demanded an agreement between the parties to the conflict, including allowing representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect the facilities.
