US President Joe Biden has condemned the “violent attack” on British writer Salman Rushdie, who was hospitalized on Saturday after being stabbed at an event in New York state.
In a statement, Biden praised Rushdie for “refusing to be bullied and silenced” and said he prayed for his “health and recovery” with his wife Jill and “Americans and people around the world”.
Rushdie was stabbed in the neck and stomach by 24-year-old Hadi Matar at a literary event in New York state on Friday.
The author was hospitalized in serious condition with assisted breathing.
The attack caused worldwide consternation more than 30 years after Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa for the death of the British writer for his work “The Satanic Verses.”
The 75-year-old British writer was born in Mumbai (now Mumbai), India, lived in hiding for many years due to Khomeini’s fatwa, and moved to New York in the early 2000s and received American citizenship in 2016.
