Salman Rushdie’s family says his ‘sense of humour’ remains ‘intact’ despite injuries

The author’s family said they were “extremely relieved” at the improvement in the condition of the author who was stabbed on Friday.

Salman Rushdie’s family said on Sunday they were “extremely relieved” the British writer was no longer on life support and said his sense of humor remained “intact” despite the severity of his injuries.

“My father is still in critical condition in hospital and receiving ongoing intensive treatment,” his son Zafar Rushdie said in a tweet intended to be posted on behalf of the family. “We are extremely relieved that yesterday (Saturday) his ventilator and oxygen supply were taken off and he was able to say a few words,” he added.

“Although his injuries are serious and life-changing, his usual lively and provocative sense of humor remains intact,” continued Zafar Rushdie, who runs a London-based public relations agency.

He thanked members of the public who came out to defend the “Satanic Verses” author during Friday’s attack in upstate New York, as well as the police officers and caretakers who came to his aid.

Salman Rushdie, 75, was stabbed this Friday ten times by an American of Lebanese origin during a conference in the northern United States.
