A court in the military-run country of Myanmar on Monday sentenced the deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to six years in prison after finding him guilty in four corruption cases.

The 77-year-old Nobel Peace Prize winner and leader of Myanmar’s opposition to the military regime is charged with at least 18 crimes, ranging from corruption to election violations, and a total of nearly 190 years in prison.

Suu Kyi has called the allegations absurd and denies all wrongdoings attributed to her.

The source was found guilty on Monday of misusing funds to build a house and rent state-owned land at a discount from the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, an organization he founded to support health and education.

Suu Kyi, who was held in solitary confinement in a prison in the capital Naypyitaw, had previously been sentenced to 11 years in other cases.

Myanmar has been in turmoil since last year, when the military overthrew an elected government led by Suu Kyi’s party that won the general election and put deadly pressure on dissidents.

Tens of thousands of people have been arrested and many have been tortured, beaten or killed in what the United Nations calls crimes against humanity.

The international community imposed sanctions on the military and considered Suu Kyi’s secret trials to be sham.

Military government spokesman Zaw Min Tun could not be reached for comment on Monday. She said earlier that Suu Kyi saw due process by an independent judiciary and rejected external criticism as interference.
