The Russian defense minister spoke with the UN chief about the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and UN chief Antonio Guterres discussed on Monday the security of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, under the control of the Russian army in southern Ukraine, where it is under bombing. .

“Sergei Shoigu conducted telephone negotiations with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres on the conditions for the safe operation of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, was seized in early March by Russian troops, at the start of their large-scale offensive in Ukraine, launched on February 24.

Both parties accuse each other

Since the end of July, several attacks, of which both sides accuse each other, have targeted the site, raising fears of a nuclear disaster and prompting a UN Security Council meeting last Thursday.

Kyiv accuses Moscow of using the plant as an attack base and equipment depot. With the support of its Western allies, Ukraine calls for the demilitarization of the area and the withdrawal of Moscow’s forces.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergei Shoigu and Guterres also spoke on Monday about the explosions that hit the Olenivka prison in the separatist Donetsk region (eastern Ukraine) at the end of July, killing dozens of Ukrainian prisoners.

Kyiv accuses Moscow of massacring these detainees. Moscow denies and claims, on the contrary, that the Ukrainian army bombed the prison camp.
