(Reuters) – Former US President Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, who helped challenge the 2020 election results, said on Monday that he and his allies are the subject of a criminal investigation in Georgia over attempts to overturn the election.
Giuliani will testify before a special grand jury in Fulton County, which covers Atlanta, on Wednesday, after a judge orders him to present a subpoena.
Giuliani said during a daily talk show on WABC radio in New York that the investigation was politically motivated, without elaborating that Atlanta was “known for corruption.”
The New York Times previously reported on the case, citing Giuliani’s attorney, Robert Costello.
In an interview with Reuters, Costello said prosecutors informed the defense Monday afternoon that Giuliani was the target of the investigation. The attorney stated that Giuliani would refuse to answer any questions about Trump that violated attorney-client privilege.
Giuliani appeared before state lawmakers in December 2020, echoing Trump’s false conspiracy theories about stolen ballots and urging them not to endorse Democratic President Joe Biden’s victory.
The Fulton County investigation began in January 2021 after a recorded phone call by Trump urging the state’s top election official to “find” enough votes to change the outcome. The former president has repeatedly falsely claimed that he won Georgia and the 2020 presidential race.
