First case of monkeypox detected in Iran

A woman in her 30s has tested positive for the monkeypox virus in southwestern Iran.

A first case of monkeypox has been detected in Iran, in a woman, the Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

“The case was identified in a 34-year-old woman, after observing her skin lesions,” ministry spokesman Pedram Pakaeen said in a statement.

“The patient, who lives in Ahvaz (southwest), was immediately quarantined,” it added, without specifying how she had been contaminated.

The first symptoms of monkeypox are a high fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a chickenpox-like rash.

According to the latest report from the World Health Organization (WHO), 31,665 cases have been recorded worldwide, including 12 deaths.

The WHO triggered the highest level of alert, the Public Health Emergency of International Concern, on July 24 to strengthen the fight against the disease.
