California police rushed to a zoo after the 911 emergency number was called, but discovered that the caller was a mischievous monkey.
After receiving a call on Saturday night, operators sent officers to investigate a possible emergency, which was soon cut off.
San Luis Obispo County agents traced the search to the Zoo to You offices, a reserve 200 miles outside of Los Angeles.
Unable to find the people in danger, the agents began investigating the mysterious link.
“Then everyone figured it out: It must be Route, the capuchin monkey,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
“Looks like Route got the zoo’s cell phone from a golf cart used to get around the zoo.”
Capuchin monkeys are particularly curious creatures that love to poke and press down on objects they collect.
“And Route did that, and it turns out he dialed the right combination of numbers to call us,” the police said.
