Mali has asked the UN Security Council for an emergency meeting to put an end to what it presents as “acts of aggression” by France in the form of violations of its sovereignty, support provided, according to him, to jihadist and espionage groups. .
The Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs distributed to journalists on Wednesday a letter in this regard addressed by the head of diplomacy, Abdoulaye Diop, to the Chinese presidency of the Security Council. Mali “reserves the right to use legitimate defense” if French actions persist, in accordance with the United Nations Charter, the minister says.
The letter is dated August 15, the date of the departure of the last French soldier in Mali after nine years of commitment against the jihadists. The junta in power in Mali since the August 2020 coup has turned away from France and its allies to Russia.
Mali denounces violations of its airspace
Abdoulaye Diop denounces in this letter the “repetitive and frequent violations” of the national airspace by the French forces and the flights of French aircraft that carry out “activities considered espionage” and attempts “of intimidation.”
The Maliennes authorities dispose of “more elements of prevention that ces flagrant violations of the air space malien ont servi à la France pour collecter des renseignements au profit des groupes terroristes operative dans le Sahel et pour leur larguer des arms et des munitions”, added the text. The French authorities did not react to these accusations.
Mali “invites” the Security Council to work so that France “immediately ceases its acts of aggression” and asks the Chinese presidency to communicate these elements to the members of the Security Council with a view to an emergency meeting, says Abdoulaye Diop.
