Seven people were killed and 20 injured when Russia bombed an apartment in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv this morning, Ukrainian officials said.
Emergency services said it took several hours to contain the fire, which was caused by the three-story building in the Saltivka district, according to a report by CNN International.
“Such an attack on Saltivka in a residential building has no justification. This is not a military target. This is an act of intimidation, genocide,” Kharkov Mayor Ihor Terekhov told Telegram.
According to the mayor’s office, at least four missiles fell on the city this morning. Ukrainian officials said someone crashed into a dormitory in the Slobidsky district, killing one person and injuring 18 others.
Another missile attack on the city of Krasnograd, 80 kilometers south of Kharkiv, killed two people.
Visit of the UN Secretary General
The bombings came on the day of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ visit to Ukraine, who will meet with Presidents of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Lviv in the west of the country.
On Wednesday, Kharkiv was hit by artillery fire that killed seven people, according to local authorities.
Just 40 kilometers from the Russian border, Kharkiv has been a frequent target of attack by the Russian army since the start of the war on February 24, but has not been occupied by invading troops.
According to local authorities, hundreds of civilians have died in the area since the occupation began.
