Pope Francis has decided not to open a canonical investigation into the alleged sexual abuse by Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouellet, the current governor of the Vatican Congregation for Bishops.
A former employee of the Archdiocese of Quebec, Canada, says the archbishop touched him inappropriately between 2008 and 2010, when he was archbishop.
The whistleblower was identified only by the letter “F”, and on one of these occasions he said that the cardinal kissed him and “slipped his hands on his hips” against his will.
“After completing the preliminary investigation entrusted to Father Jacques Servais by the Pope, which concluded that there was no reason to prosecute Cardinal Ouellet on charges of sexual assault, […] Vatican Spokesman Matteo Bruni said Pope Francis declared there was not enough element to open a canonical investigation.
The complaint against the Cardinal is part of a class action lawsuit against more than 80 members of the Archdiocese of Québec, which the Pope visited at the end of July. On this occasion, Francis apologized for the crimes committed against native Canadians by the Catholic Church.
