Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday affirmed Ankara’s support for Kyiv and expressed alarm over the risk of a nuclear power plant disaster during his first visit to Ukraine since the Russian invasion.
“As we continue our efforts for a solution, we have been and continue to be on the side of our Ukrainian friends,” he said during a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Lviv. Ukraine.
“We are worried. We do not want to experience a new Chernobyl”, the Turkish head of state also declared in reference to the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, occupied by Russia.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan clarified that the issue of prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia was also discussed at the summit. “I want to make it clear that this is an important issue for us… We will continue to have discussions on this issue with Vladimir Putin,” he said.
The Turkish president last met with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on August 5 in Sochi, Russia. While quickly condemning the Russian offensive, Turkey opted for neutrality between the two countries and did not join Western sanctions against Moscow.
Ankara is also supplying Ukraine with its famous Bayraktar-TB2 combat drones with proven effectiveness against Russian tanks.
