Wars that are or can be: more blood, sweat and tears

There is never a single future. But a broken present necessarily shapes the future. The current planet-distorting adversities have occurred in just a portion of months, a period in which they destroyed the status quo which has kept global tensions in a certain balance.

Only human resilience, with persistent amounts of hope, has made it possible to reduce the degree of drama of the stage, as shown by the reaction of European municipalities in the face of the emptiness of the energy abyss.

The war in Ukraine is not, as is claimed, the end point of the system of globalization and world economic integration and interaction. Sure, it will change behaviors. As the pandemic has taught, there will be no more dependence on unpredictable suppliers, either in the irresponsible choice of economic locations for pharmaceutical or energy supply facilities.

But the essential point of the Russian military action, loaded with a hateful fascist scaffolding, is more serious and complex than it seems. This war in Europe, that of a country devouring another with impunity, discusses central agreements of the political development of humanity that date back nearly four centuries ago.

Rights

In 1648, with the Peace of Westphalia, which ended two wars that lasted two decades, a new order began to regulate the world. The concept of national sovereignty is born which, in basic terms, builds the notion of territorial integrity, the limit that states constitute. These are the red lines that shouldn’t be crossed.

Although they have since been intensely violated, they have formed argumentative architecture among those who have fought to restore them. As happened in World War II to defeat Nazi despotism.

The offensive launched by Vladimir Putin against Ukraine once again violates this constitutive precept. The Russian autocrat believes, as Hitler argued, that he has the right to cross borders and sovereignties to recover territorial power and a strategic centrality which reproaches that the great powers deny him.

An inferiority complex that he intends to resolve with this military adventure whose results for Moscow are at least opaque after almost six months of fighting.

Putin is going back in history ignoring the sovereignty of his neighborhood as did the old feudal warlords, which Westphalia and its pacts came to straighten out.

The worst thing about this grave episode is that it builds a precedent which, if it does not have an explicit outcome against Moscow’s imperial ambition, could expand at the hands of other autocrats such as the Turkish Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who dreamed of reviving the Ottoman. empire like Putin the Tsarist, can advance on Cyprus, the Greek islands, the Balkans or the South Caucasus.

The crisis with Taiwan it is the other component that is added to the disaster planetary fueled in the nationalist duel of the two major world powers. Almost simultaneously with the Westphalian agreement, the English philosopher Hobbes explained two central concepts on the fury of war that characterizes humanity and which serve to conceptualize the clash between the US and China, but also Russian barbarism in Ukraine.

“It is not simply a question of having the power to reach the object we need, but of having more power than the other who also wants the same thing”commented.

concluded that “War does not consist only in battles or in the act of fighting, but in a period in which the will for confrontation is sufficiently declared. The nature of war … appears ready to do so fight all the time where there are no guarantees that the opposite should be done. All other times are times of peace ”.
