Roberto Gualtieri, one of the chief advisers to the mayor of Rome, resigned this Friday (19) after a video was released showing him threatening the two men with death threats.

The hero of the scandal is Albino Ruberti, chief of staff of Gualtieri, the representative of the Italian centre-left, who has been ruling the capital for nearly a year.

In a video released by the newspaper Il Foglio, Ruberti yells at Vladimiro De Angelis, brother of former MEP Francesco De Angelis, and a man identified only as “Adriano”.

“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you! You have to get down on your knees and apologize, or I’ll write down what you asked me at the table tonight,” Gualtieri’s adviser says in the recording, which will be made at a dinner party about two months ago. Frosinone

The exact reasons for the fight are still unclear, but he complains several times in the video that Vladimiro and Adriano said they could “buy” him. “Are you going to buy me? This shit Vladimiro?” says the counselor, when his wife tried to calm him down, without success.

“Five minutes! I’m going to shoot you! I’m going to kill you! Five minutes, here on your knees, both of you!” cried Ruberti. Shortly after the video was released, the centre-left acronym Democratic Party (PD), to which everyone involved belongs, said the episode was “very serious” and would not be “conclusive”.

Then, while Ruberti resigned as the chief of general staff, Francesco De Angelis, who was also present at the dinner, withdrew from the PD parliamentary candidacy in the September elections.

“With regard to the video released by the Il Foglio newspaper, the illustrious mayor, I affirm that this was a verbal fight during a private dinner, which has nothing to do with my corporate role. It did not constitute a corrupt proposition in itself,” said Ruberti.
