Ukrainian officials said a Russian missile hit a residential area not far from a nuclear power plant in a southern Ukrainian town on Saturday, injuring 12 civilians, raising fears of a nuclear accident during the war in Ukraine.
Vitaliy Kim, the governor of the Mykolaiv region, said on the messaging app Telegram that four children were among the holidays in an attack that damaged several houses and a five-story apartment in Voznenk.
The city is about 30 km from the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear power plant, the second largest nuclear power plant in Ukraine.
The Mykolaiv district prosecutor’s office updated an earlier count, saying 12 civilians were injured.
State-owned Energoatom, which manages Ukraine’s four nuclear power plants, described the attack on Voznesensk as “another nuclear terrorist act by Russia”.
Russia did not initially respond to the accusation. Reuters was initially unable to confirm the situation in Voznesensk. No damage was reported at the Pivdennoukrainsk plant.
