The head of a regional branch of the Ukrainian security service (SBU) was found dead at his home in central Ukraine, the prosecutor’s office said on Sunday.
On Saturday night, Oleksandr Nakonechny’s wife heard the sound of a shot in their apartment in Kropyvnytsky before discovering the body of her husband shot in one of the rooms, the prosecution said on Telegram.
The police have opened an investigation to establish the cause of his death, added the prosecution without commenting on the theses examined by the investigators.
An investigation is open to establish the cause of death.
A local elected official, Andriï Lavrous, for his part, stated on Telegram that the person responsible had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. Oleksandr Nakonechny had headed the SBU branch in the Kirovograd region since January 2021.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky fired SBU chief Ivan Bakanov in July, accusing him of insufficient efforts in fighting spies and collaborators from Moscow, which launched its invasion of Ukraine in February.
Volodymyr Zelensky then announced an “executive review” within the SBU, several top officials have been fired in recent months.
