Journalist, political expert and supporter of the occupation of Ukraine: this is Russian Daria Dugina, daughter of ultranationalist Alexander Dugin – considered one of the main gurus of President Vladimir Putin – who was killed in an alleged attack on Saturday (20). A Toyota Land Cruiser car belonging to his father, whom he was traveling with, exploded on a road outside Moscow.
According to Reuters, the suspect is that a bomb was placed on the outside of the vehicle, under the driver’s seat. The Russian news agency Tass adds that the attack will target Alexander Dugin, not Dugina. Previously, father and daughter were at a nationalist festival called “Traditions”.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry said it believed Ukraine could be behind the attack. But Ukraine has denied any involvement, according to Reuters. “We are not a terrorist state,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, told local television.
Who was Dugina?
Daria Platonova Dugina, 29, graduated in philosophy and is described by the District’s Research Committee as a journalist and political scientist. She was editor-in-chief of the United World International (UWI) website, which argued that Ukraine would “destroy” if it joined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), a military alliance of 30 countries.
As a commentator on the nationalist television channel Tsargrad and the website of the International Eurasian Movement, he strongly expressed his views. This Sunday (21) Tsargrad, “Dasha [apelido de Dugina]like his father, he was always at the forefront of confronting the West”.
In March, Dugina was one of the targets of US sanctions for contributing to disinformation about the war in Ukraine. Four months later, in July, sanctions were imposed by the United Kingdom for the same reason, according to the American newspaper The New York Times.
“[Dugina é] He is a frequent contributor to misinformation about Ukraine and the Russian invasion of Ukraine on various online platforms.”
Is My Father Really Putin’s Guru?
The influence of Dugina’s father, Alexander Dugin, on Russian President Vladimir Putin has been the subject of speculation. Some experts call it important, hence the reason for nicknames such as “Putin’s philosopher”, “Putin’s brain” and even “modern Rasputin”. But for others, Dugin’s influence on the president was minimal.
In recent years, Ukraine has banned several of his books.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack.
Russian authorities are investigating the death of Daria Dugina as murder. According to Reuters, the attack is suspected to have been premeditated.
Denis Pushilin, leader of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic in eastern Ukraine, blamed Ukrainian forces for the explosion. “Terrorists of the Ukrainian regime tried to liquidate Alexander Dugin but killed his daughter,” he wrote on his Telegram account.
Maria V. Zakharova, Spokesperson of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, refrained from attributing the alleged attack to the neighboring country, but if Ukraine’s responsibility is confirmed, “Then we will have to talk about the terror policy of the state, which Russia has adopted the Kyiv regime”.
“We are waiting for the results of the investigation,” Zakharova said, again on Telegram, according to the NYT.
Ukraine denies any involvement in the alleged attack. “Of course Ukraine had nothing to do with this, because we are not criminals like Russia. More than that, we are not a terrorist state,” Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, told local television.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.
