The governor of Indiana state arrived in Taipei on Sunday, becoming the last US official to visit Taiwan, defying pressure from China to stop such trips.
China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory despite strong objections from the Taipei government, has been holding war exercises close to the country since US Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s two-day visit to Taipei earlier this month.
Last week, a second group of US lawmakers visited democratically governed Taiwan.
Governor Eric Holcomb tweeted that he would also visit South Korea, while the Taiwanese presidential office said he would meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning.
“I am energized to spend this week building new relationships, strengthening longstanding ones, and strengthening key industry partnerships with Taiwan and South Korea,” Holcomb said.
