Campaign leaders for former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva want him to stop direct confrontation with President Jair Bolsonaro over the war on religion and dedicate his speeches and interviews to more talk about the economy and democracy.
At meetings yesterday and today, Lula was advised to leave the debate on religion to federal lawmaker André Janones (Avante-MG), the lead actor of the PT campaign on social media. PT parliamentarians will also enter this front.
The prevailing view in the campaign is that Bolsonaro managed to dictate the electoral debate by bringing up the issue of religion. Usually, whoever sets the agenda under discussion will have an advantage.
Lula was advised to stop direct confrontation and invest in dialogue with pastors and evangelical believers. Bolsonaro has an advantage in this constituency. PT wants to reduce resistance in this population.
At the same time, the former president was instructed to focus on the economy: high inflation, expensive food, low wages and a return to starvation in the country. Conversations about the importance of defending democracy also contribute to making important differences with Bolsonaro, a coup planner who threatens not to recognize a possible electoral defeat.
Authorization: Janones received the direct endorsement of Lula and the head of the PT, federal lawmaker Gleisi Hoffman (PR), to act as the key spokesperson for the campaign on social networks. Lula approves of Janones’ style. These were the themes of UOL’s podcast “Radar das Eleções”.
