A military spokesman said Tuesday that US President Joe Biden had ordered airstrikes on facilities used by pro-Iranian militias in eastern Syria.
Central Command spokesman Joe Buccino said in a statement that the attacks in the oil province of Deir ez-Zor (eastern Syria) “targeted infrastructure used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards.”
Buccino stressed that “the sensitive attacks are aimed at defending and protecting US forces from attacks by Iran-backed groups against US officials on August 15.”
The comment referred to a drone attack on the base of US-led anti-jihad forces that did not cause any casualties.
Colonel Buccino told CNN that Tuesday’s attacks hit nine bunkers at a complex used for ammunition storage and logistics.
Buccino said the US military planned to hit 11 of the 13 bunkers in the complex, but stopped bombing two of them when they detected the presence of people nearby.
According to the military, the initial assessment shows that the attacks did not result in casualties.
“US forces took proportionate and deliberate actions to limit the risk of escalation and minimize the risk of loss of life,” the colonel said in a statement.
Hundreds of US troops have been deployed to northeastern Syria as part of the coalition fighting against the remnants of ISIS.
