US President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that about $3 billion in military aid would be delivered to Kiev, the day Ukraine celebrates Independence Day, and six months after Russia’s invasion of the country began.
“I am proud to announce our largest ever share of security assistance: approximately $2.98 billion in weapons and equipment to be delivered through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative,” Biden said in a statement.
This will allow Ukraine to acquire air defense systems, artillery and ammunition systems, unmanned aerial systems and radars to ensure that it can continue to defend itself in the long term.”
The funds are available for immediate war costs, including the purchase of supplies and weapons, and are separate from the Presidential Withdrawal Authority (PDA), where Biden can order the transfer of weapons and ammunition from American military stockpiles to Ukrainian forces.
On Friday, the Pentagon announced the latest package under the PDA: $775 million in missiles, guns, artillery and armored munitions, as well as a fleet of mine-clearing vehicles.
Biden also praised Ukraine’s resistance to the Russian occupation, which began on February 24.
“Six months of nonstop attacks strengthened the pride of Ukrainians in themselves, their country and 31 years of independence,” he said.
“We stand with the Ukrainian people today and every day.”
