British Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a surprise visit to Kiev on Wednesday, the day Ukraine celebrates 31 years of independence from the Soviet Union, days after leaving office.
This is the third visit of the British prime minister to the Ukrainian capital since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24.
Others were in April and June. “Not all countries are fortunate enough to have such a friend,” said President Volodymyr Zelensky, while receiving Johnson.
Already the Prime Minister congratulated the “strong will of the Ukrainians to resist”. “This is what Putin does not understand. You defend your right to live in peace, so Ukraine will win,” he added.
Johnson was a prominent supporter of the Ukraine cause, but will resign on September 5, when the Conservative Party announces its new leader.
The dispute is between former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and Foreign Minister Liz Truss, who has pledged to continue support for Kiev.
