Several people were injured Wednesday in a shooting in Washingtonannounced the police of the capital, which has not specified a death toll, although according to some local media there are two deceased.
The event took place in the northwest of the city and the NBC network reported that five people were attacked and two of them died.
The shooting was reported on the corner of O Street NW and North Capitol Street, just north of New York Avenue in the capital’s Truxton Circle neighborhood.
According to NBC, police officers, firefighters and local emergency services were called to the area because “several people shot”.
The units arrived shortly after 12:45 local time and found several people killed and lying on the street.
“Two people were pronounced dead at the scene and two, possibly three, were taken to the hospital,” they wrote on NBC.
They described that near the scene of the events there is a bilingual private school and fearful parents could be seen picking up the students at the time of the incident.
Police cordoned off the area while investigating the incident. “It is not immediately known if they have a suspicion,” they wrote.
Several streets were closed around the shooting scene, police said. These were First Street NW between O and P Streets and the 1300 block of N. Capital Street. They also indicated that groups in the area had been diverted from work on the site.
“It is unknown what caused the shooting,” local media said.
Another deadly shooting, half a block away
NBC reported that a 25-year-old man was killed and a woman was injured in that incident on Florida Avenue and N. Capitol Street. “It is not yet known whether these shootings could be related,” they explained in detail.
So far this year136 people died in homicides in the Districtcompared to 131 last year at this time, according to data from the Metropolitan Police Department.
“Violent crime in general increased by 2% and attacks with a dangerous weapon decreased by 11%,” NBC reported.
