Ukraine announced on Friday that it is preparing an operation to reconnect the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which was occupied by Russian forces and was disconnected the previous day, to the electricity grid.
“We are carrying out preparatory work to reconnect the two reactors at the Zaporizhzhia plant to the grid,” said Energoatom, the public operator of the country’s four atomic power plants. Said.
The Zaporizhzhia plant is the largest in Europe.
According to Energoatom, a line that supplies electricity produced by the plant to the Ukrainian power grid has been “repaired”.
The operator said that the plant is powered by another line repaired by the Ukrainian grid. The company also stressed that its safety equipment and systems are operating normally.
Ukraine announced on Thursday that the Zaporizhzhia power plant has been “completely disconnected” from the electricity grid “for the first time in its history” due to damage to several power lines.
The plant, which has six reactors with a total capacity of 6,000 megawatts, was occupied by Russian forces in March, during the first weeks of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
For several weeks, Russia and Ukraine have been making mutual accusations of bombing the plant.
The UN has called for the creation of a demilitarized zone around the facility to ensure its security and allow an international inspection mission to be dispatched.
On Thursday, energy ministry adviser Lana Zerkal said a delegation from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would arrive in Zaporizhzhia “next week”.
“Although the Russians acknowledge that the mission passed through Ukrainian territory, they are artificially creating barriers for the mission not to visit this facility,” he added.
