Donald Trump has repeatedly criticized the search, speaking of a “witch hunt”. The US Department of Justice released the document to respond to the former president.

Federal Judge Bruce Reinhart had ordered the Justice Department to release this key document, which was supposed to detail the reasons that led to the investigation of Donald Trump, citing public interest in the unprecedented search of the home of a former US president.

But the magistrate had agreed to the ministry’s request to redact important parts of the document, which might otherwise have revealed the identity of certain actors in the case, in the name of a “pressing” need to protect the investigations. Authorities waited until the last minute and released the 38-page document shortly after 6:00 pm, the deadline set by Judge Reinhart.

They had initially opposed the publication of such a document, arguing that it would require redaction “so important that the rest of the published text would lack significant content”.

On August 8, the FBI raided Donald Trump’s Florida residence, Mar-a-Lago, seizing boxes of confidential documents that the Republican had failed to return after leaving the White House, despite multiple requests. Donald Trump, who flirts with the idea of a candidacy for the 2024 presidential election, has long criticized this search, which he sees as an illustration of a “witch hunt” that he is targeting.
