Health officials in Asunción said Friday that the first confirmed case of monkeypox in Paraguay was a patient aged 30 to 35 who spent two weeks in Brazil.
“This is a Brazilian case,” Guillermo Sequera, director general of Health Surveillance, said at a press conference about the epidemiological situation in the country.
Sequera added that the patient residing in the Central department visited different cities in Brazil, especially the Midwest region.
“The first case is going pretty well, pretty stable,” the director said when asked about the patient’s condition, who said he was outpatient and under “continuous monitoring.”
Currently, none of the people who have been in contact with this person have shown “symptoms” or “compatible signs” with monkeypox, according to Sequera, but they are being watched.
Regarding the situation in the country, the person in charge of Health Surveillance said that 17 suspected cases of the disease have been ruled out so far.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that cases of monkeypox had fallen worldwide last week, except in the Americas, where they continue to rise.
Lab-confirmed cases rose to 41,664 in 96 countries, with 12 deaths reported.
