Ukraine’s southern military command said on Monday it has launched a long-awaited counteroffensive in the south of the country.
“Today we started offensive actions in various directions, including in the Kherson region,” as quoted by Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne, spokesperson for the Southern command, Natalia Humeniuk. He confirmed the news at a briefing minutes later.
Ukraine has been talking about a planned counterattack in the Russian-occupied southern regions for two months.
Humeniuk added that Ukraine’s recent attacks on Russia’s southern logistics routes “indisputably weakened the enemy” and that more than 10 Russian ammunition depots were hit last week.
However, he declined to provide further details about the new attack.
“Any military operation needs silence,” he said, adding that Russia’s forces in the south are “pretty strong” and built up over time.
