Chinese prosecutors announced on Monday that they are prosecuting 28 suspects for a brutal attack on a group of women, an event that went viral and sparked anger, and a controversy over gender-based violence in the country.
Footage of a group of men attacking four women at a restaurant in Tangshan, east of the capital Beijing, in June quickly circulated online, rekindling the debate over violence against women in China.
According to the video, the men attacked the women after she rejected them.
Prosecutors in Hebei Province said they launched an investigation into the suspects after collecting enough credible evidence – including the seven people directly involved in the attack.
In the statement published on a Chinese platform called Weibo, which works like Twitter, the allegations were not included.
According to state television CCTV, police identified the main suspect as “Chen” and said he “used reckless violence to do evil”.
After the attack, Tangshan authorities fired the police chief and five other officers and launched a crackdown on organized crime.
The debate over women’s rights in China is growing despite widespread censorship and pressure from a patriarchal society where there is little legal support for victims.
