The Vatican released an official memo this Tuesday (30), reaffirming that Pope Francis has always condemned the war launched by Russia in Ukraine, and that his stance on the case is to defend life, not take a political stand.
The show took place at a time when Ukrainian representatives were critical of the Catholic leader, influential ultranationalist ideologist Alexander Dugin, for mourning the death of his daughter, journalist and political analyst Darya Dugina. Russia is being touted as one of President Vladimir Putin’s main allies in his “imperialist drift” in the region.
During Francis’ speech to the general audience on August 24, he said he thought of “the poor girl in Moscow who was blown up in the air with a bomb under the seat of her car” and always said it was her. “Innocents who paid the price of war”.
“In the context of the war in Ukraine, Holy Father Francis and his collaborators have made numerous interventions in this regard. Efforts to rebuild peace,” it says at the beginning of the note.
According to the Vatican, “on more than one occasion, as in recent days, there has been public debate over the political significance to be attributed to such interventions.”
“At these points, it is reinforced that the Pope’s words on this dramatic subject should not be read as a political stance, but as a raised voice to defend human life and the values attached to it. Wide dimensions in Ukraine, the interventions of Holy Father Francis, initiated by the Russian Federation. is clear and unequivocal in condemning it as morally unjust, unacceptable, barbaric, senseless, disgusting, and disrespectful.”
Tensions with Kyiv arise as the Pope negotiates a possible visit to Ukraine. But the Catholic leader has always made it clear that he wants to do the script, including a visit to Moscow, but the Russian government has not made an opening for the visit.
