A fragment of a fossilized dinosaur skeleton was unearthed by paleontologists in the backyard of a house in Lisbon, Portugal.
Researchers from the Faculty of Science at the University of Lisbon believe it was a sauropod, one of the largest dinosaur groups ever discovered in Europe.
“The fossil remains of Monte Agudo are well preserved, preserving the original anatomical position the animal would have had in life. This form of preservation is relatively rare in the fossil record of dinosaurs (especially sauropods) from the Portuguese Upper Jurassic period,” explained the institution. , on the note.
The large size of the fossil is one of the features highlighted by the researchers, and according to them, “a hypothesis pointing to the possible existence of other parts of this individual’s skeleton is one that will be tested in future excavation campaigns in the sediment.”
According to scientists, sauropod dinosaurs were herbivores, quadrupeds, with long necks and tails.
The sediment is located in the Pombal region, in Upper Jurassic sedimentary rocks about 150 to 145 million years old, according to the University of Lisbon.
The studies were carried out from 1 to 10 August by a team of Portuguese and Spanish paleontologists from the Instituto Dom Luiz das Ciências ULisboa, the UNED-Madrid Group for Evolutionary Biology and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Universidad Complutense. Madrid..
