A couple from Utah (USA) entered the Guinness World Records, the traditional Book of Records, with the largest height difference between female couples reaching 85 cm. Christie Chandler is 1.82 meters tall and Senecca Corsetti is only 97.3 cm due to a type of dwarfism known as diastrophic dysplasia that affects the normal development of bone cartilage.
The idea to try to get into the record books came from Christie, who brought up the subject with her partner.
“We’ve talked about this before, like, ‘I bet we have the biggest height difference in the world.’ We joke about it, but we never took it seriously when trying to get that title,” Senecca said.
They met while teaching at the same school while Christie was teaching arts and Senecca was teaching math. “They were bringing in new teachers and I was in the room. He got into the wheelchair and I honestly hid because I had never seen a little person before. He was very friendly, introduced himself and we started to be friends.” said Christie.
The new Christie helped Senecca fit in and invited her on outings among the staff. They became close, dated for three years and got married in June 2021.
In their relationship, only the difference in height is big, but they have common aspects such as love of art, sports and teaching.
Senecca said, “Because we’re both teachers, she brought us together. She understands if I’m struggling at school, if I’ve had a good day, or if I have a question. It’s great to have someone who understands you.”
According to Senecca, students and teachers responded well to the relationship, mainly because of the representation. “They love us being together and they think we’re the cutest couple. I think a lot of LGBTQIA+ kids feel comfortable because they know ‘my teachers are in this group and will support me’.”
The couple admitted to having difficulties early in the relationship because of their height difference, but they think it taught them that true love is about patience. Senecca says, “My advice for dating someone who’s taller or has a disability is just to communicate. Let them know about your needs and expectations. That goes for any relationship.”
Traveling is their biggest challenge, according to Christie. “We get used to it and use multiple wheelchairs depending on what we do. I’ve been very good at booking affordable hotel rooms and making sure what we do is accessible.”
