President Jair Bolsonaro’s comments about Chile’s President Gabriel Boric’s alleged involvement in subway fires in the Latin American country prompted Chilean lawmakers to make an unusual attempt. Lawmakers want Bolsonaro to deliver his speech before the Legislative Assembly in Santiago.

During the debate between presidential candidates on Sunday, Bolsonaro criticized former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for his support of progressive Chilean Boric. He announced that he would support someone who participated in the burning of the metro in the Chilean capital during the protests in 2019.

The next day, Santiago Chancellor Antonia Urrejola told UOL that such statements were “very serious”, affecting bilateral relations, and that Brazil’s ambassador to Chile would be summoned to receive a note of protest. Boric, according to him, never participated in such actions.

Now, however, Chilean lawmakers want to go further and have demanded that the Brazilian president appear before a Special Commission of Investigation based in the country to fully investigate the events leading up to the fires.

“It is unacceptable and not very serious,” said MP Andrés Celis. “I think he (Bolsonaro) is completely wrong. But since I am part of the Commission of Inquiry, I will ask the prime minister’s office to invite Bolsonaro to present the alleged background,” he said.

“I’m sure he has nothing. But if he can say that as the president of a country like Brazil there are elements that Boric participates in, then we will invite you to present the data,” said Mr Bolsonaro.

“I don’t know what he’s thinking. But he has to answer. And if he doesn’t send us the information (about Boric’s alleged involvement), everyone will know he missed the truth,” he said.
