China this Thursday (1) denounced the UN report, which highlights human rights abuses in the Xinjiang region, as a “political tool” against its government.

The UN released a long-awaited report on human rights abuses in China’s Xinjiang region on Wednesday, warning of possible “crimes against humanity” against the Uyghur Muslim minority and pointing to “credible” manifestations of torture.

“The so-called critical report you mentioned was planned and produced firsthand by the United States and some Western powers. It is completely illegal and invalid,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said at a press conference.

The report added that “it is a mixture of disinformation and a political tool of the West’s strategy of using Xinjiang to control China.”

Wang also claimed that the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) had acted as a “rogue and accomplice” of the United States and the West “against the vast majority of developing countries”.

“OHCHR created the report out of nothing, based on the political conspiracy of some anti-Chinese forces abroad,” he insisted.

China has been accused of detaining more than a million Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in the remote western region of Xinjiang for several years.

Beijing vehemently denies the allegations and insists that the places it claims to be prisons are actually professional training centers aimed at countering extremism.
