Germany, Poland’s largest trading partner and a member of the European Union and NATO. He has already said that all financial claims related to World War II have been settled.

Poland’s new estimate exceeds the $850 billion made by a ruling party lawmaker as of 2019. The ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party has repeated claims for compensation several times since taking office in 2015, but Poland has not formally sought compensation.

Law and Justice Party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski said at a press conference, “The amount offered was accepted in the most limited and conservative way, it would have been possible to increase it.” said.

The combative stance against Germany, often used by PiS to mobilize its constituencies, strained relations with Berlin. The approach intensified after the Russian invasion of Ukraine amid criticism of Berlin’s dependence on Russian gas and its slowness in helping Kiev.

In 1953, Poland’s communist rulers withdrew their demands for war reparations under pressure from the Soviet Union, which wanted to relieve East Germany, which was also a Soviet satellite, from any responsibility. PiS said the deal was invalid because Poland did not negotiate fair compensation.

“The attitude of the German government has not changed: the issue of compensation is closed,” said a spokesman for the German Foreign Ministry. “Poland long ago renounced further reparations in 1953 and has repeatedly confirmed this since then.”
