The crew of a ship bound for Scotland from India encountered a “straw squirrel” that spent three weeks on board undetected.
The animal had traveled more than nine thousand kilometers aboard the Deep Explorer until it was found by crew members days before it went ashore in Aberdeen on Tuesday 30.
The ship called NGO New Arc to rescue the animal nicknamed “Zippy”.
He was placed in a cage where he was identified and fed as the Indian palm squirrel, a common species in the Central Asian country.
According to the NGO, there are more than 40 different species of squirrels in India.
“Despite the stress caused by a three-week trip across the ocean, he’s in good health and eating,” the NGO said in a statement on social media.
In positioning, Keith Marley, the person in charge of the NGO, reported that the organization is now looking for a place to permanently house the squirrel.
“We’re checking to see if some of the zoos have this type of squirrel. We hope to be able to donate him so he can live with his peers and have a comfortable routine,” he said.
