The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights wants the incident involving Argentina vice-president Cristina Kirchner to be the subject of an in-depth investigation and warned of the risks of political violence in the region.

“We are aware of the news we are seeing and we are shocked,” high commission spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani said at a news conference in Geneva on Friday. “It is very important that an investigation be carried out as to what happened and how it happened,” he insisted. According to him, the UN office will “follow closely” the events.

The man who pointed a gun at the Argentine was 35-year-old Brazilian Fernando Montiel. He has lived in Buenos Aires since the 90s.

The UN spokesperson also insisted on condemning threats or violence against political leaders. “Any act of political violence should be condemned. It is important to address differences through dialogue, and certainly not in this way.”

Before leaving her post last week, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet also issued a warning about the risks of political violence in Brazil and democracies in general.
